Retooling Detroit: Architect, Rehabber Find Riches in Ruins

- there’s a nice bit here about using preservation tax credits. The entire series is interesting. When you think about revitalization, there’s no greater challenge than Detroit. I believe we will see real innovation out of Detroit in the area of revitalization over the next 15-20 years.

The Sultana
http://wamu.org/programs/dr/09/04/15.php
In 1865, a steamboat sank in the Mississippi River killing seventeen-hundred passengers. Guest host, Katty Kay, and journalist and author, Alan Huffman, discuss the forgotten story of the worst maritime disaster in American history.

The Sultana is believed buried today under about twenty feet of soil beneath a soybean field in northeast Arkansas near Marion

President’s Volunteer Service Awards are now available for 2009 service hours

We are excited to announce that President Obama has signed a letter of recognition for those qualifying for a Presidential Volunteer Service Award. As a result, we are now fulfilling award requests for 2009 service hours. Thank you for your patience as we have managed through this time of transition. We look forward to fulfilling your requests with the updated award package.

The PVSA awards program recognizes volunteers for a sustained commitment to service (please see www.presidentialserviceawards.gov for details about becoming a certifying organization and honoring your volunteers). Awardees receive a pin, a letter from President Obama, and a letter from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Since inception in 2003, more than 28,000 organizations have distributed more than 1,477,000 awards to individuals, families, and groups.

Please feel free to forward this e-mail and share with other volunteer organizations. If you have any questions, www.presidentialserviceawards.gov is your best resource.
